BLACK-tivists Coaster Set

BLACK-tivists Coaster Set

The BLACKtivist set:
The four women featured in the BLACKtivist Coaster Set are activists who fought and continue to fight for freedom, equality and justice. These women were most prominent during the 50s and 60s but their advocacy, based in feminism and racial equality is as relevant as ever.

Angela Davis is a political activist, academic scholar, and author who emerged as a prominent counterculture activist and radical in the 1960s. He coaster features the quote, "I am no longer accepting the things I cannot change. I am changing the things I cannot accept."

Audre Lorde was a writer, radical feminist, womanist, and civil rights activist. She was a celebrated poet, whose poems and prose largely dealt with issues related to civil rights, feminism, and the exploration of black female identity, expressing anger and outrage at civil and social injustices she observed throughout her life. Her coaster features the quote, "Your silence will not protect you."

bell hooks is an American author, feminist, and social activist. She has published over 30 books. Her writing focuses on the intersection of race, capitalism, gender, and sexuality, through a post modern perspective. He coaster features the quote, "Without justice, there can be no love."

June Jordan was a Caribbean-American bisexual poet and activist, who contributed a great deal to feminist theory. In her 27th book, published posthumously, she describes how her early marriage to a white man immersed her in the racial turmoil of America in the 1950s, and set her on the path of social activism. Most people credit POTUS Obama for coining the phrase "We are the ones we have been waiting for," but it was the last line of June's, "Poem for South African Woman," written in 1978, where we first read those words.

This set is a rallying cry to those who refuse to accept our current rape culture (#yesallwomen), the brutal slaying of countless unarmed black men (#blacklivesmatter), or any injustice that requires fighting for.

Stand up, people. Speak loudly.

THE BLUE GIRLS

THE BLUE GIRLS

The BLUE GIRLS set:
The four women featured in the BLUE GIRLS set lived in a constant state of self-expression. For better or worse, they let us know how they were feeling all the time. Some would even call them tortured souls. I, on the other hand, am in awe of their transparency.

Janis Joplin said, probably about music but I think it applies to life as a whole, "If I hold back, I'm no good. I'm no good. I'd rather be good sometimes, than holding back all the time."

Nina Simone had this to say on her mixed sound, "What I was interested in was conveying an emotional message. Which means using everything you've got inside you. Sometimes you barely make a note, or if you strain to sing - you sing. So sometimes I sound like gravel and sometimes I sound like coffee and cream."

Putting forth the effort was enough to satisfy Sylvia Plath - “I love my rejection slips. They show me I try.”

Frida Kahlo knows what she needs to feel good, and she keeps it so very real, "I tried to drown my sorrows, but the bastards learned how to swim, and now I am overwhelmed by this decent and good feeling."

This set is an ode to those who may be misunderstood but keep-on keeping-on in the only ways they know how.

THE LEARNED LADIES

THE LEARNED LADIES

This set was originally made exclusively for a pop-up with Basic Terrain clothing.

I conceieved of this coaster collection after a conversation I had with my friend Joy Bryant about women, strength, and advice that we’d received from our elders. Specifically, the words of wisdom that we’ve carried with us to get through the scariest of times:

“Sometimes you just have to shut up and be brave,” is what I tell myself when I’m afraid.

“Nothing beats a failure but a try,” is Joy’s go-to, courtesy of her grandmother.

This set is an ode to women, to overcoming adversity and to owning ones self.

Coaster set features:

Kara Walker - "Who am I beyond this skin I'm in?"
A contemporary visual artist who explores race gender, sexuality, violence and identity in her work.

Anais Nin - "Good thing happen to those who hustle."
An author who wrote journals (spanning 60 years), novels, essays, short stories, and erotica.

Erykah Badu - "Check yourself. Brace yourself. Protect yourself. Face Yourself."
A singer-songwriter, activist, and actress who is regarded as "the first lady of neo soul.”

Dolly Parton - "Storms make trees take deeper roots."
A singer-songwriter, author, actress, and philanthropist known primarily for her work in country music.
